October Cult Cosmetics BlackBox Review

BlackBox is a monthly subscription box by Cult Cosmetics. For $24.99/month (+ shipping), they usually send a few nail polishes and some kind of nail tool. October’s box included items from Cult Cosmetic’s debut nail polish collection.

The goodies:

Graffiti Nail Art Effect in “Weho”

This “multi-dimensional black and silver glitter” didn’t go on quite as thick as I hoped, and it took a few coats to get the desired effect I wanted.

$24.99 (part of 3-piece “The Glitters” set)

Botanical Base Coat (w/Aloe Vera)

Includes vitamin E to help the skin surrounding your nails.

Nail Lacquer in “Joshua Tree”

I’m always looking for a good “nude” to match my fair skin tone.

Nail Lacquer in “Point Dume”

This “bold electrifying blue” was my favorite from the box 🙂

Nashville Trip October 2013

In October, I was fortunate enough to have a friend from Grad school ask if I wanted to go with her to the KEEN Digital Summit in Nashville. She won free passes – woo hoo! – for the 3 day conference geared towards bloggers, journalists, and the like. Overall, I learned a lot to take back with me to apply here, and got to network with a totally different group of folks than what I’m used to (IT support folks or analysts).

From a subscription box perspective, I got the opportunity to talk to one of the guys at Batch Nashville, who had a big display at the conference. Batch Nashville offers a monthly box featuring locally made items from pancake mix to bath & body products for $31.98/month. I’ll be sending my friend who invited me to attend a 3-month subscription as a “thank you” 🙂

Onmi Nashville

View from our window – AT&T “Bat Building”

I had to snap a pic of this Johnny Cash memorabilia that was displayed in the corridor from the Onmi to the Music City Convention Center (super nice, btw). My dogs are named Cash and June after all!

Hatch Show Print

This cute kitty lived at the Hatch Show Print shop that was right next door to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. They had some cool vintage style posters (especially from shows at the historic Ryman Auditorium), and I picked up a Johnny Cash one for the hubby.

The Southern Steak & Oyster House

On our last night in Nashville, we went to The Southern for dinner. It was walking distance from the hotel, and we were looking for some good food and cocktails. The recycled cowboy artwork kept us entertained while waiting for a table at the bar – it’s made out of all kinds of recycled materials like traffic cones!

Then we found some chairs by the serving line, where I spotted them weighing this mammoth 54 oz. steak!

Couldn’t pass up oysters as an appetizer since they looked so yummy at the bar 🙂

Truelove’s Pizza & Grits

On the way back to Birmingham, we stopped for a late lunch at Truelove’s in Columbia, TN via Yelp. We split a small Pizza Maker Special, with some Shrimp & Grits. Both were spectacular – we inhaled all of it!! The folks were pretty nice too, and even changed over to an Alabama football game for us (if you’re not a SEC football fan, you have no idea what I’m talking about, lol). A little off the beaten path, but I would definitely return!

Fall FabFitFun VIP Box Review

FabFitFun VIP is a quarterly subscription box that is curated by Giuliana Rancic, and contains a variety of items for $49.99.

The goodies:

*You might notice my box was missing the Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Cleansing Foam – it came a few days later. No worries though since they sent me email notification that this might be the case.

Barre3 Standing Slim DVD and Online Program

I’m in the middle of a weight loss challenge at work again as I write this review (last year I lost 10 pounds, have kept it off, and am aiming to lose another 10 this year), so I will be trying this exercise DVD out soon. I actually forgot I had it – my hubby volunteered to make me a digital copy and buried it in a pile of stuff in our office that I recently happened upon 😦 Anywho, this 30 minute barre routine promises to deliver “fast body-shaping results” that I look forward to seeing for myself!

Bright Pink’s Brighten UP Card and Alert Sticker

Informational card about breast cancer awareness – sign up for monthly text alert reminders to check your breasts

Awkward Family Photos @ Amazon $24.99  $18.41 with Prime

Starlooks 5 Shade Shadow Palette in “St. Tropez”

I ended up gifting this eyeshadow palette since I have enough to share 🙂

*also included a 15% discount on the FabFitFun Signature Set

Orly FX in “Go Deeper”

Orly products have always impressed me, but I haven’t gotten around to sporting this awesome “Ocean Blue Holographic Glitter” polish yet. I can see wearing this in the summer.

Sparitual Nail Lacquer in “From the Heart”

I ended up gifting this too since I already had a couple of polishes in a very similar shade – a “Deep Red Creme”

Orville Redenbacher Popcorn

I enjoyed this “Classic Butter & Sea Salt” microwave popcorn as a snack, and would consider buying again in the future. At half the fat of regular popcorn, I don’t feel guilty eating the whole bag 🙂

$6.39 @ Amazon

These multivitamins are for “health-conscious” drinkers and support liver health by helping your body eliminate toxins.

$39.95/90 capsules

Surface Trinity Protein Cream

I’ve been using this spray-on hair cream on days when I wash my hair. While my hair is still wet, I spray it in before applying any other products to help keep my hair smooth.

$24.80 @ Amazon

Health Warrior Chia Bar in “Apple Cinnamon”

This snack bar is only 100 calories, and full of all kinds of awesome stuff like 1000mg of Omega 3 and plant-based proteins. A little on the pricey side for my taste though.

$23.50/15 bars

Gorjana Canyon Scarf

I absolutely LOVE this scarf! The colors and cute canary print make it easy to incorporate into several outfits (both work and play).

Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Cleansing Foam

Facial cleansers seem to be a permanent fixture in FFFVIP boxes, which is fine with me! It’s something everyone can use and the brands included are usually on the luxe side. I like that this formula is foaming, and it leaves your face feeling clean and soft – it even smells yummy too!

October “Kaleidoscope” Phone Case of the Month Review

Phone Case of the Month send you a new case for your iPhone 4/4s/5/5s/5c or Samsung Galaxy S3/S4 every month for $10. I’m usually happy with what I receive (plus the quality is relatively good), and thought this case – Kaleidoscope – was spot on for my favorite Fall month 🙂

October Weight Loss Bulu Box Review

Bulu Box sends you 5 healthy living items for $10/month. I subscribe to the “Weight Loss” version, so the products are more focused on helping you keep on track to meet your weight loss goal.

The goodies:

VP2 Whey Protein Isolate

This dietary supplement helps stops hunger and to build muscle during weight loss. It’s offered in a variety of flavors from chocolate to fruit punch, and can be mixed with milk or water.

$54.99/32 servings

Natural Vitality Natural Calm

This anti-stress drink is sitting in my cabinet at work waiting for my inevitable nervous breakdown. Magnesium is the secret ingredient – just mix the powder with water and wait for Calgon to take you away…

$23.95 $16.99/8 oz

Rootology Support for Nasal Health

Rootology helps maintain nasal/sinus/eye health, and can also be used for seasonal allergy relief. I took this upon returning from my October trip to Vegas before I was able to make it to the doctor. Unfortunately, I had walking pneumonia, so it wasn’t as effective as it could have been – I needed the big guns to make me feel better. I would like to give this a shot if my Spring allergies kick up.

$16.99/40 count

NeoCell Beauty Bursts

I’m all about collagen boosters for better skin, hair, and nails –  I take Biotin every day. These just aren’t cost effective compared to 250 Biotin tablets for $8!

$22.49/60 chews

truDerma Mangodrin

I need to try this belly fat blaster, which uses African Mango Extract to help increase metabolism and energy.

$49.99 $40/60 count

Bonus Item:

Livewell 360 $25 Gift Card

I was excited about this gift card, but these gym bags start at $167! Probably won’t be redeeming this one…

October Ipsy “The Art of Beauty” Glam Bag Review

Ipsy is one of my favorite low-cost beauty subscription services, and send you 5 items (plus a cute cosmetic bag) for $10/month. October’s theme was “The Art of Beauty” 🙂

La Fresh Oil-Free Face Cleanser Wipes

I’m a fan of La Fresh products, and can always use some makeup removing wipes! These are oil-free, and are gentle on skin. They are best for removing “light” makeup though, so don’t count on them to remove waterproof or eye makeup (but they have tons of other wipes to choose from that will do the trick!).

$9.99/3o wipes

Coastal Scents Medium Natural Shadow Brush

How did they know I was in the market for a new eyeshadow brush?? I’ve been using it for a while now, and love it! It’s the perfect size for applying your base eyeshadow color.

Style Sexy Hair Spray Clay Texturizing Spray Clay

I have yet to try this stuff out, but may be adventurous and pack it for my Chicago trip. I think it’s the “clay texturizing” part that makes me nervous to try it. After reading the info online, it looks like it would be perfect for my curly hair.

$18.95/4.4 oz

I’m not sure what happened to some of my pictures, so please excuse the screen grab from my Instagram feed.

Zoya Nail Polish in “Mason”

I have other Zoya polishes, and like the longevity of the formula. I painted this “exciting red violet or Fandango Pink metallic” on my toes recently – love the color!

Bella Terra Mineral Cosmetics Shimmer in “Navy”

Yet another product to take with me to try. I want to attempt an “unconventional” smoky eye using a different color than black, and may end up wearing this to the concert since it’s a little loud 🙂

October CurlBox Review

CurlBox is a monthly subscription service ($20/month) that sends you 5-7 products meant specifically for curly hair.

The goodies:

Hydratherma Naturals Protein Balance Leave-in Conditioner

It’s been a long time since I’ve tried a cream leave-in conditioner out of fear of it weighing my hair down. However, it’s been a brutal Winter so far, and I’m probably in need of using one!

$15.99 + $5 shipping @ Amazon

**Also included 20% off all Hydratherma Naturals products at healthyhairjourney.com (expired 12/1/13)

Real Me Curl-to-Coil

I plan on using this curl activator while my hair is still damp before blow drying with a diffuser. While the bottle says it’s meant for all types of curly hair, I still have reservations. This product contains a special mixture – “Join Complex” – of vegetable collagen, pracaxi, coconut, macadamia, avocado, and argan oils.

**Also included 10% off at nunaatonline.com (expired 11/31/13)

Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk

This hair refresher spray has been great to use on 2nd day hair, and has lasted a while. I use it all over my hair following applying dry shampoo to my roots to bring my hair back to life after being slept on. Key ingredients include agave nectar, wheat protein, and sweet almond oil (which gives it a nice scent).

$18 $11.70 (on sale!)

**Also included 20% off purchase at carolsdaughter.com or retail stores (expired 12/31/13)
